The report on Post Office closures failed to mention the root cause of the problem, the EU. All the Post Offices being closed are as a result of EU Directives 97/67/EC and 2002/39/EC, the government is just implementing the wishes of our masters in the EU. This is not the end of the story either, next year all postal activity will be open to private competition and it is estimated another 3,000 Post Offices will be closed. No guesses for where the majority will be, rural areas such as Devon & Cornwall. (Alec Yates)

I wonder just who the people are that sanctioned the closure of the rural Post Offices in Devon in general and my local branch in Chillaton in particular  and what are their true motives, I cannot speak of all of the branches concerned but I do know that in Chillaton we have one Pub, one Car sales and repair garage and the Post Office /Shop, replacement of which with a mobile service verges on lunacy not only will this almost certainly mean the loss of our shop ,cause untold inconvenience to the elderly (of which I am one) but will also make it necessary for everyone to make more car journeys to obtain daily necessities.  Do those involved consider it a mere triviality in having to make a twelve mile round trip to buy a daily paper, loaf of bread, milk etc.  I suppose that all these economies are necessary to fund the bailing out of organisations like Northern Rock etc where the management have gambled with their investors money, lost it and then run to The Bank of England to bail them out and hence guarantee their fat salaries and bonuses. Is it not about time that the UK Government realised that the people of this country are important and if they expect to succeed in tackling GREEN issues then decisions of this nature are not the way forward.  (T.Richman)

The closure of Stoke in Teignhead PO is absolutely devastating.  We are a village community with only 2 buses a week!  Both allowing only 1 hour before returning to the village.  This is barely enough time to visit the P O let alone other shops which will now be necessary.  We have one shop in the village which will close without the support of the PO.  This means many villagers will have to rely on neighbours for transport to buy basic food.  The rest of us will have to use the car MORE than we would have done.  The PO seems to have closed our PO temporarily as a ruse to get away with the final closure more easily.  I feel very angry at the way in which this has been dealt with, clearly no one has even considered our presentation, we know many other PO exist that are not as necessary as ours.  Clearly the ONLY consideration is the profitability.  Ironically we could have made ours work, discussions had been held to agree help and support to make it financially viable.

Without even the possibility of a satellite service this is absolutely outrageous. (Sue Coatham)

The "Peoples Post Office", should cut the cost of pretending that acting as an agent for an insurance company, is what people want from the Royal Mail.  On Monday I ordered 7 books at 11am, a carrier delivered the parcel on Tuesday at 10.30am. Cost £7.65.  Perhaps we should appoint someone from the parcel industry to run the Post Office? (Brian)

Millions of other people are working on the same wage scales but are not striking. They should like it or get out. Failing that ignore the unions sack them all and take on people who want to work . Maybe if there were more people doing more in the councils instead of so many pen pushers looking busy there might be more money to go around.  (Jason)

Pete Goss might be sailing to Australia but he is doing it in a Lugger, not a 'cornish' lugger and he is following the journey made by a crew from Cornwall, which, being just another County of England makes them English, not 'cornish'! (Steven)

Having just watched the local news regarding the rising cost of fuel for the Air Ambulance and the RNLI, would it not make sense for the Government to waive the fuel tax for both the emergency charities, thereby saving those charities upwards of 68p per litre on fuel. A massive saving for them and not a great expense for the Government. (Alan)

40 years at sea! How lucky he is.  Many of us would think ourselves fortunate if we could clock up 5 years in a job before we get made redundant.  (David Edwards)

All prices are going up ridiculously but people forget about the people not working due to ill health.  A block of cheese is around £4 - £5 thats 12% of some peoples income.  Not to mention gas and electric.  The government has turned this England into a third world country and they wish to vote themselves a TEN THOUSAND POUND payrise...ITS DISGUSTING.. (Mike in Plymouth)

Why does everybody have to pander to the gypsies when everybody has to work long hours pay roof tax income tax while they do not contribute at all? (Dennis)

Do the petrol drivers go looking for petrol like we are for cars?  Do they get it from work?  It’s the wrong way, they are putting are jobs at risk.  One day we will all be home and wonder why no buses are running, no petrol for care.  If they get this rise we all should have £40,000 a year like them.  (Patrick)

Rumour has it that the business at Foxhayes Garage is up for sale with planning permission for flats.  No wonder he's not worried about boycotting of his forecourt.   I wonder how good his vouchers for discounted MOT's will be if the sale goes through!!!!   Looking after his locals??? (Lynda)

If garages really want to stop people panic buying, limiting purchases to 6 Litres ( a useless amount, which will just cause people to top up at every garage ) or charge rip off prices, all they need to do is introduce a minimum purchase of 45- 50 litres, in other words, only people running low will buy fuel.
As was proved in the last strike, all that happened was that most of the country's fuel went from being stored on forecourts to driveways. (Glyn)

I totally agree with the tanker drivers union reps quote that you don't know what you have until it is no longer there. This also applies to the tanker drivers jobs. Perhaps their employers should consider releasing the lot of them and employing people like my son who drives articulated lorries all over the country for £10,000 less than the tanker drivers. The greedy so and so's would very soon learn what they no longer have. (Brian)

I am fed up  with hearing about bloody dolphines on the news. there must be some thing else more interesting going on in the county. (Lesley)

People are criticising the garage owner - what about the tanker drivers who are holding the whole of the South West to ransom for their greed - is it right they are only looking for £36,000 /year? (Stephen)

I don't understand why someone who just drives a lorry and delivers petrol is asking for £40000!? My granddad delivers frozen food and he isn't striking, because he knows people have to be kept fed. I have lost all feeling for the petrol drivers and now I think it is just ridiculous. Mum and dad aren't really happy, because we aren't exactly a well off family and now mum and dad have to pay loads for petrol. If we can only just afford to put food on the table, I don't know what will happen in the future. Also what about families worst off than us! (Jake)

This morning I cancelled my Shell Drivers Club Card and I told them I won't be buying petrol from Shell or BP (same company) ever again. Enough is enough. Everyone who has had to go elsewhere for their petrol should boycott the Shell stations when things get back to normal. Hopefully this would not only affect Shell sales but the drivers as well - they are both out of order. Who do they think is really suffering?
(Colin)

I have no sympathy with the strikers. I have now run out of petrol, as adistrict nurse this is a nightmare. the area where i cover is very rural and the petrol stations are empty. I wont be able to work, the patients will suffer and I wont get paid. ill never earn £36000!
