On May 1st elections were contested in five of the local authorities in the West region. One third of the seats in each council were up for election (apart from Cheltenham BC which is elected by halves) a total of 78.

The Liberal Democrats picked up seats at Cheltenham, but failed to gain overall control. There was no change in Conservative stronghold Swindon.
