Terrorism Arrests in Mitcham
|
|
A man suspected of terrorism offences has been arrested in a dawn raid at an address in Mitcham, Surrey, today. The raids were carried out by officers from the Metropolitan Police counter-terrorism command. Two other men were arrested in a similar raid in Newtown in Wales. The men are being held on suspicion of offences under the Terrorism Act 2000. Officers have searched business and residential properties in Newtown, Mitcham, and Harrow following the arrests. The men detained in Newtown are aged 46 and 49 and the man held at Mitcham is 33. All three have been taken to police stations in central London for questioning. They were arrested on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism. Today's arrests were part of a long term investigation into alleged funding and procurement activities relating to terrorism and two men are already facing charges arising from the inquiry and awaiting trial. It's understood the investigation centres on funding raising and procurement activities into the Tamil Tigers terrorist group operating in Sri Landa and India.
