Meridian & Thames Valley : Information

How clean are your local baby changing facilities?

Special report by Reshma Rumsey

Baby changing areas are used by thousands of parents every day - a key facility in shops, restaurants, public places and even on board trains.

But do you have an idea how clean they are? Thames Valley Tonight has carried out an investigation to find out the truth. We've secretly filmed in 12 baby changing areas across the region, testing for levels of bacteria, hygiene standards and even hard drugs. What we found was shocking.

Do you have an experience to share? Let us know what you think about baby changing facilities where you live.

Location of test Test findings Company response

McDonald's, Cornmarket St, Oxford

High TVC counts, coliforms and a broken strap

"We have a number of serious concerns over the techniques used in this investigation, chiefly that it is ludicrous to apply food standards to a toilet facility.
"McDonald's apologises for the broken strap which had already been identified and fixed before we were contacted by this programme."

Oxford BP Garage, Peartree, Oxford

High TVC counts, coliforms and faecal streptococci. Positive cocaine test. A broken strap.

"We are surprised by the results of the tests on the baby changing facilities at our Woodstock Connect site. These toilets are used very heavily day and night by our customers and we endeavour to keep them as clean as possible at all times.
"
We take the findings seriously and are reviewing our cleaning policies especially in relation to the baby changing trays at sites where these are available."

Mothercare, Cowley, Oxford

bottle warmer - High TVC counts, coliforms. Baby changing mat - High TVC counts and coliforms.

"Here at Mothercare we are committed to providing parents’ and baby changing rooms in our stores as we know it is a service our customers value very highly.
"
We are equally committed to maintaining high standards of hygiene within those facilities, which are regularly cleaned with checks made throughout the day.
"
We acknowledge the disappointing results of these tests and we are undertaking an investigation into the housekeeping in our Cowley store. We will ensure that our high standards of cleanliness are maintained in future."

Welcome Break Service M40 Jcn 8a

bottle warmer - High TVC counts. High chair - High TVC counts and coliforms. Baby changing broken strap.

"Welcome Break strives to maintain the
highest standards at all times across its service stations. It appears that
in this instance, we have fallen below those standards.
"Our toilets and baby changing areas are monitored and cleaned by staff
every 45 minutes and the highest levels of hygiene are paramount to
ourselves and our customers.
"Welcome break has an excellent reputation for its toilets and the
facilities for its customers. This is emphasised by the fact that the
company has won numerous awards in the annual Loo of the Year awards.
"We believe that the situation at Oxford was an isolated one and we will
ensure that a similar situation does not occur again."

Broad Street Mall, Reading

High TVC counts, coliforms and faecal streptococci. Positive Cocaine test.

"Health, safety and hygiene are of paramount importance to us at the Broad Street Mall.  Our cleaning regimes are constructed and scheduled in a manner to minimise any such risks of this nature and all cleaning materials used are recognised anti-bacterial products.
"We acknowledge that on this particular occasion, the samples that were taken at the end of what was a busy trading day showed traces of some bacteria forms. Reviews of our cleaning procedures have since taken place along with a thorough deep clean.
"For info we have brought forward refurbishment works of the baby changing room and toilets by 3 months and intend to totally revamp them in the next couple of months."

Cross Country Train to Manchester

Positive for cocaine.

"We thank ITV Thames Valley News for bringing to our attention their findings, which naturally cause us great concern.
"
All our trains receive a heavy clean overnight and also regular cleaning throughout the day from onboard cleaners who pay particular attention to toilet areas. Each of our trains has three members of onboard staff who patrol all coaches regularly, and we are certainly not aware of any general problems of drug abuse or other anti-social behaviour within our on-train environment. Toilets, however, are more difficult to monitor, since their use behind a locked door is essentially private.
"
We therefore regard this regrettable finding as unrepresentative of a situation peculiar to our trains, and rather a sad reflection of the increasing abuse of drugs in the wider environment from which our services are clearly not exempt.
"
We shall, of course, draw the attention of our staff to the regrettable situation discovered by ITV and remind them of the need for thorough cleaning of all on-train areas at every opportunity."

KEY TO TERMS
Total Viable Count all general living bacteria.
Coliforms Can be a strong indicators that a place hasn't been cleaned very well and indicate faecal contamination.
Faecal streptococci We do have that in your intestines but if a baby were to have there hands on it and then put their hands in their mouth and get an infection that way it could cause sickness, diarrhoea and vomiting.

METHODOLOGY
Surprisingly there are no official standards for bacteria levels on baby changing facilities.

The only guidelines that DO exist relate to areas used in food preparation. Our microbiologist used those figures - and her years of expertise - as a guide to determine whether the bacteria levels we found were so high she'd consider them unacceptable.

Swabs were taken and taken back to the lab and tested. An immediate drug test was used a wipe based swabbing test.
