Pupils across the country have found out today where they will be going to secondary school in September.
But a fifth of pupils in Brighton and Hove have missed out on their first choice of school because of the introduction of a new system based on catchment areas.
Many were caught up in a lottery for places after the most popular schools in the city became oversubscribed.
Wherever you are in the country, there is an appeal process you can use to try to have your child's place reconsidered:
- The letter you will have received confirming the school offer for your child will have details on how to appeal.
- The appeals are held by independent panels organised by each school admissions authority.
- It is up to parents to compose an appeal that shows that a particular school would best serve teh interests and abilities of their child, and how the child would suffer if not admitted to his or her preferred school.
- Private consultants are sometimes hired by parents to put together appeals.
- The appeal itself is final; there is no higher authority if the appeal fails.
