Earthquake Emails

Back to quake menu

Adam Hawkes – Bradford

I'm just emailing to tell you my earthquake story. It was 12:57am. I was laid on my bed. On msn and myspace. Then the house started to shake. I can't remember what was going through my head. But i knew straight away it was an earthquake. I ran into my parents room and screamed that we had just had an earthquake. They were awake but said that they didn't feel it. But my mum said it sounded like the washer turning off. I returned to my p.c all giddy and excited. And it had signed me out of instant messenger. When i finally signed on everybody was off. Then one by one they came back. Everybody said as soon as they had signed on "did you feel that?" And this is coming from people in Pontefract, Bradford, Skipton, Leeds and even Barton near Hull. I was a little shook up. But mostly excited. I didn't end up getting to sleep until roughly 5am

Paul Barber - Lincoln

i thought it was a terrorist bomb attack! a huge bang,my flat was shaking, pictures fell off the wall, lightbulbs fell to the floor, cups and plates smashed, then i knew it was a earthquake,as i could feel the ground moving slightly,a strange experience.

Tracey

my daughters hampster died sometime in the night, dont no if it was the shock of the earthquake.

Darren Graham - Leeds

I was playing games online at the time of the quake, I think it was about 1 a.m when it started i did not hear any noise as i was wearing headphones. But believe me it scared me to death i have never felt anything like it in my life .i felt the ground moving below my feet then my computer desk stated shaking. i even thought it was like a paranormal experience at 1 point.  Then wen i took off my headphones i realised it was either a bomb or a quake. I ran to check if it had stirred my partner it did she was confused i tried to look on the internet to see if there had been any news flash but could not find anything it was only this morning when my suspicions were confirmed

Helen Greenacre - Grimsby

I live in Grimsby which is about 15 minutes away from Market Rasen. I woke to my bed actually shaking me from side to side, wardrobe doors banging and a horrendous rumbling noise. At first i thought i hadn't woken properly, and i was still dreaming but as it went on i realized i was awake! I looked out of the window to see if anything was going on in the field behind us. I thought a plane might have crashed or something. After seeing nothing, i went to check on my 4 children who had all slept through it. I then went downstairs because i then thought my tumble dryer might have blown up. I looked out of the window and it had gone silent, but lights were on all down the street. Unbelievably nothing had broken or fallen over inside or outside the house. It was pretty scary but at the same time exciting because i never thought i would ever experience anything like it in my lifetime. I am pleased it woke me up!

Carole - York

you may like to hear my story. I was sat on the loo it started to move the floor stated creaking the door frame was creaking the whole house was shaking .I was petrified, looked out side no one to be seen, was i going mad woke today to discover we had had an earth quake.

Angela Webb - Scarborough

I was actually sat on the toilet at 1.00am this morning!  All of a sudden the toilet shook and I heard a rumble and the door rattled.  I was very frightened and wondered if I was been haunted!  After checking all through the house to make sure nobody was breaking in I thought then it must have been an earthquake.  I went to bed frightened it was going to happen again.  I woke up and switched on the tv and now know it was an earthquake and feel very lucky that there hasn’t been any damage to my property.

The 'Masons' - Hensall, Goole

Hi, our names are Gary and Julie Mason, we live in a small village called Hensall, nr Goole.  We were woken up the early hours of this morning with, at first we thought..moving farm machinery. As we live near farm fields this often happens and can cause vibrations with very heavy vehicles.  We rubbed our eyes, and heard rummbling... then Gary's aftershave bottles were clincking together  on the dressing table and the wardrobes doors started rattling. We thought they were going to fall over onto us!! A very scarey earth moving experience ha ha.

Nikki Mitchell – York

I woke up to my house shaking, my bed rocking and doors banging. At first I thought someone was trying to steal my house so I didn't want to get out of bed so I shouted for my mum. Then I thought it was a truck going over a bump past my house but realised that there isn't a bump outside my house. My mum said it was probs the wind and until my friend and boyfriend rang me saying they felt it as well and it was an earthquake I thought it was the wind. My friend woke her mum up and her mum thought that she was on a boat and my boyfriend thought there was a monster in his wardrobe, at 21 you'd think he wouldn't be scared of the boogie man. hehe.

Elaine Davison - Pontefract

We felt the quake very strongly.I was awake listening to the wind and i heard it coming.I knew when i heard the noise what it was as a few years ago my husband, myself and our 4 grown up children were unfortunately involvled in a 7.5 quake whilst on holiday in the Dominican republic which damaged the hotel and even shook the water out of the swimming pools. The size of our earth quake last night was still just as frightning, perhaps even more so as i knew exactly what  it was. It shook our bed and rattled the mirrored sliding wardrobe doors. The rumble you get before the movement is very unmistakable.

Mandy Jones - Maltby / Rotherham

My husband and I lived in Greece for three years and returned to the UK just over a year ago. We thought we had seen the last of earthquakes having experienced three of them whilst in Greece. We were both in bed and were woken to what sounded like thunder, rumbling and glasses shaking. We knew what was happening and it seemed to last for about a minute. After the main rumble, we could still feel the house 'trembling' slightly for about 15 seconds. Its difficult to put a time on it because it felt longer at the time. One or two people came out onto the street and were obviously discussing the quake, wondering wht the hell was going on, but it soon calmed down. We wondered if it was mining subsidence at first caused by last years rain and after a while decided to go back to sleep. We didn't know for sure that it was an earthquake until this morning when we put the tv on. Scary stuff!

Dianne Sellers - Bradford

on the 27th of february we were all in bed and was awoke by floors shaken bed shaken wardrobes shaken as well it was very frightening my daughter woke was shouting me she was really frightened shouting mum mum I want u as she was frightened of getting out of her bed she thought they was ghosts in her bedroom she was really frigtened and scared she was crying wudnt sleep on her own she had to sleep with me I told her her she was dreaming she said no mum carnt u hear it I said yes just to sleep but she wudnt

Valerie & Richard - Beverley

We live in Beverley, East Yorkshire in a 2nd floor flat, we had not long been asleep as we had been out for my birthday then we were jolted awake by the vibration and movement of the bedroom fully moving at first we thought it was our imagination but as it kept going then stopped we relised what had just happened. At first we thought someone had ran into our building or part of the flat had collapsed. Never been so scaried, our bed was jumping about moving and vibrating bedroom furniture was moving towards us the whole room was just moving about. No damage from what we can see but we'll never forget that night!!

Zoe Wood - Keighley

My name is Zoe Wood, i am 24 years old and am from Keighley in West Yorkshire. I went to bed around 12.45am last night and as i was dropping off to sleep i felt a slight shaking of the bed. I sat up thinking i was imagining it but it got alot stronger. I then realised it must be an earthquake, i panicked and jumped out of bed ready to get my 4 children out of the house for fear it might fall down. Then as quickly as it started it stopped! I went downstairs to ask my partner if he felt it but he felt nothing. I was shaking for a long time and it took me ages to sleep after that. I have never felt anything like that before and hope i never feel it again. It was the scariest feeling i have had in a long time!!!

I'd only been in bed a few minutes, when from nowhere this noise, I feel is best described as when you are about to take off on the runway, that rumbling noise that gets louder and louder before take off. It came just before 1.00am and lasted approx. 10 seconds (at the time it felt more like 10 minutes). Items on my dressing table were rattling, so to were the wardrobes and bed. I had hoped my 6 year old (who appeared to be sleeping at the time) had not experienced anything. However, when she got up in the morning she asked why had her bed been shaking in the night? For those few seconds a truly frightening experience and one I hope i don't have to witness again.

Jay - Beeston

i would like to just say that me n my partner wer in bed last night n the wind was that bad that our house moved room side to side. the bed shook violently n the wardrobe moved. u could feel the house sway..

Susie King – Moorends, Doncaster,

We felt the tremors. It was really fightening. I thought the water tank was going to explode!! The electricity supply was off for a few hours in some of the streets near us. Which must have made it more daunting.

Julienne Fotios – Huddersfield

The earthquake could certainly be felt in huddersfield.  I was in my home office when the rumbling started.  At first i thought our central heating was going to blow up - then it crossed my mind that ram raiders on motor bikes were attacking the house!  Then i remembered the old'earthquake' film and felt sure that it was a quake - when my chair started to move beneath me i was certain! Later my husband woke up and i told him - i don't think he believed me at first - he does now!

Veronica Mitchell - Sowerby Bridge

Just to let  you know the eartquake was felt in Sowerby Bridge West Yorkshire. I live in a top floor apartment. The bed was moving from side to side, the doors that were closed were banging constantly and I felt abit dizzy.

Pamela - Silsden

I am sure I was awaken by the earthquark in the early hours. I felt the bedroom shake and heard something banging. I dnt think much till I heard the news this morning on gmtv. I live in silsden west Yorkshire - Do you think this would be felt there?

Sarah - Grimsby

It was an unbelievable experience, We were woken up about one am by the whole house shaking. It must of been bad as i always say i could hang my partner on a washing line and he will still sleep through. ha ha. The earthquake actually woke both of us up and we just lay in bed in shock till it stopped. We then got up to see if it was just our house, but in the street houses front doors 1 by 1 opened and everyone was asking the same question did you feel that? No one new then what it was. A few chimneys have fallen on the streets around us. It was just frightening.

Jan Elmhirst - Bridlington

I live in Bridlington on the East Coast and the earth did move, I thought I was dreaming at first and woke my partner up to check if had heard the noise but he had slept through it.  I looked out of the window and saw nothing and just thought I’m either dreaming or going mad!!  I felt much better when I put the news on the realised what had happened.

Dawn Chadwick - Leeds

Great Preston Leeds 26 we woke just after midnight and felt the impact from the outside wall into the middle of the house and under the wardrobe we got up to check the house as we thought a wall had come down All was well and credit to our builders who two years ago secured our old cottage !

Lucy, aged 11 - Thornhill, Dewsbury

My whole family was woken up last night. We thought it was the wind, at first but noticed the trees were not moving. I actually thought it was the impact of a bomb!!

Ian Smallwood - Wakefield

Just before 1am our house shook with a huge rumble and my immediate thoughts were an aircraft or a bomb had gone off immediately outside. A large mirror in our bedroom shook also some pottery in the room was vibrating. I went outside to inspect but found no damage. Wierdly, there were some birds on my dorma roof, as shocked as we were.

Mrs.Tomomi Cope - Scotter

I am living in Scotter, Nr.Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, which   locates very near to Maket Rasen. And I have numerous experience about earthquakes because I used to live in Japan from 1967 to 1998. I also used to live in Yokkaichi, Mie, Japan which  was not far away from Kobe, Osaka, so I had experience from Kobe Earthquake, I still remember on the day. (The force of earthquake shaked me and I was  rolled over from my bed. It was very early morning.) When I felt this time's earthquake in Scotter, I was in bed but I was not quite going to sleep yet. It was very calm and quiet, there was no traffic.  I felt the whole house bibrates and shaking with a horrible sound, exactly I  used to feel numerous trammers and earthquakes in Japan. It lasted only 10 seconds but felt quite a long moment. I tried to wake my husband up and I  said to him, I think it was an earthquake. He woke up around 4AM and I also  told him, it was quite strong and I though it was at least scale 4 (actually  at Maket Rasen 5.2), but it was much shorter and weaker than Kobe  earthquake. I woke up very early because I worried my sugarcraft cake which was left on top of the dining table last night. I thought it slided off and fallen onto the ground. But luckily it was fine. Me and my husband checked the cealing joint and walls but nothing obvious so he initially did not beleave it. But I also said to him it was not strong and not long enough to give a crack of the plaster of the building. I said to him it must be something happend  underground and if it is an earthquake, it is possible to be quite close to  our place. And in the morning around 6AM, I switched on TV and I found I was right. the  time and even the scale of the earthquake is quite close... Scientifically earthquake is consists of 2 shakes.. 1st one is vertical one and 2nd one is horizontal one. But usually only 2nd one, side to side one  you can feel.. 2nd one is also longer than 1st vertical shake. I never felt 1st one.. this time also 2nd one.. This type, 5.2 scale at Maket Rasen earthquake is not really uncommon in Japan, and we just normally hear as ordinary news... often you can find a special subtitled message on TV if you switched on TV straight after you felt earthquake..together with the Tsunami possibility or not information.. But as it is very rare in this countly (in 24 years?) I think everybody seems to be quite excited about this..for me earthquakes are horrible  situation and I am not keen them at all.

Julie Hannant - Stanton Hill

my name is julie hannant from stanton hill ,nottinghamshire.i woke up about 1am this morning as my daughter was in her cot wimpering as her cot shook ,as did my wordrobe and bed, also items fell off the top of the tv...i woke my husband who slept through the terrible rumbling sound...i was frightened...

Lesley Jones - Copmanthorpe

I was up working early this morning, in Copmanthorpe, between 1am - 2am in the lounge when I honestly thought a train must have come off the tracks nearby, there was such a loud rumbling noise. I turned down the music I was listening to, and looked out of the window. Nothing. I turned back to start workinga again and within seconds there was a weird loud noise that seemed to be coming from beneath the house. Everything began to shake, the windows, the china, and then THE LID OF OUR GRAND PIANO FELL DOWN! I was terrified. I just froze on the spot, waited for what seemed to be minutes, then went outside to see id there had been a plane crash. I had never experienced anything like it in my life. Needless to say, the man of the house slept through the whole thing !!!

Jo Raven - Grimsby

Me and my 10 year old daughter experienced the quake last night. She woke me up about 1 minute before it happened because our cat was on her bed pestering her.  I told her to bring him to me so i could take him downstairs.  We met on the landing, and with that there was a loud rumble, which i initially thought was the wind, but that was followed with a bang and the whole house moved, then it started to shake and there was lots of noise.   It was very scary, and my daughter started to cry.  I phoned my husband who was at work, and he said they had felt it there too, and that eased my mind a bit, as we figured it was probibly a quake. Me and my daughter first thought a plane had crashed nearby!! I actually thanked her for waking me up. becauase i would have slept through it otherwise!!

Peter Capstick - Leeds

We've just had an earth tremor at 00.57hrs BST in Leeds West Yorkshire. I was reading at a computer desk at home when there was a loud rumbling noise. The house was shaking & my desk was shaking back & forth and I could feel the movement under my feat. My daughter was sat in the other room said the Sofa she was sitting on was shaking.

Katrina Falk - Osmondthorpe

I was sat watching tv at 00.57 and had my newborn son laid at side of me when my whole house started to shake, it was bad enough for me to be able to hear glass and pots clinking together in the kitchen and upstairs. I have never experienced it like that before and started shaking after it happened. I think i was more shocked than anything at feeling the sofa shaking and i could actually feel the house shaking, i hope it isn't something thats going to happen often, I first thought a truck or something had smashed into my garden then once i realised what it was i rang my dad to see if he felt it which he had. Just getting over the shaking now ha ha.

Lisa Edlington - Doncaster

At 1am this morning I was woken by my bed shaking vigorously, picture frames and ornaments falling off of my dressing table and then a loud rumble followed.  I was a little unsure what it was because i'd been asleep.  It lasted a good 10 seconds and my whole house shook, my house was making strange noises for the rest of the night that seemed to be coming from the attic and the central heating system.  It took me a few hours to get back to sleep.

Gail Matthews - Garforth

We live in Shipley, West Yorkshire and this woke us after 1 am to find pictures, lights etc shaking - even a bedside cabinet in son's room moving!  It felt as if something had either landed on house or in garden!  Hope no-one or property seriously affected. A few years ago we had a similar experience (don't think quite as much on scale) when whole house shook too!

Anne Howes - Keyingham

Earthqhake 1.00 am this morning Keyingham ,village east of Hull. Terrific rumbling and noise-wardrobe doors rattling. I was terrified and couldn't stop shaking. Mum still shaking- she lives at the other side of the village.

Aaron - York

Morning, I felt the tremor last night at my flat in york. It started off slow and ended with big shudders lasting only 5secs. Why do we get these tremors in britain when we dont even sit on a fault line? You hear of this more now, i can remember that one in dudley last year i think it was. Peace.

Jo - Sheffield

I was in bed and my daughter was with me, at 1.50 am we both sat bolt upright and she was saying 'mum, someone's shaking the bedroom!' It was quite an experience!

Mrs & Miss Scott - East Hull.

Sirs Mother & Daughter alone in Hull as Father in hospital. Just before 1am the whole house, including our beds, shook. We immediately jumped out of bed and ran downstairs to check what was going on with the house. All other houses in the avenue remained in darkness so we assumed that they had not been affected and it was only our house.....we were so scared we stayed up all night. We did not ring the police or anyone because we thought it was just our house and they would think we were mad!!! We were going to ring the Gas Board this morning but thankfully it was on the news about the earthquake. Very scary.

Olivia Harris - Barnsley

I was woken by the earthquake last night jut before 1am and so was my husband. I asked him wha he was doing at first thinking he was having a huge fit ( he's not known to have them) because the bed was shaking so much but then I heard the windows rattling and said to my husband after it stoppped "I bet that was a tremor" he told me to stop being daft and that it was the wind. Imagine my delight when he came upstairs this morning to tell me I was right.

Claire Ward - Normanton

I was woken by the earthquake in Normanton, West Yorkshire. The walls, ceiling and radiators were all shaken and I almost fell out of bed. I tried telling my partner but he thought I was dreaming and went back to sleep.

A.Whitlock - Liversedge

At one this morning I was laid awake listening to the wind blowing down the chimney whan I heard a tapping noise on the wall. It was the picture hanging above my bed.Iy gradually got faster and louder and then after about 20 seconds stopped and I heard a loud short boom and the door vibrated and then all was silent. I thought it was an Earth Tremor as I had had the experience before. When I awoke at 5 am and put on the news....they confirmed my thoughts. time of event.....1 am.

Hazel - Barnlsey

We felt the earth quake this morning. it woke us us up at five to one as is was shaking the bed.  It even knocked my poor cockatiel off his perch.  I was awoken the last time we had one but it was not as strong or as loud as this one, it really was loud.

Mohammed Zubair - Bradford

hello i was sitting infront of my tv in my front room around 1am on 27th of feb, when my whole house started to shake,at first i thought it was the strong winds outside, but the way everything moved in the house i knew it was an earthquake, my children came running down saying what was that, these were the scariest few seconds of my life.my name is mohammed zubair and i live in bradford, west yorkshire

Brent Huntington - Goole

No doubt about it. I was lying awake in bed when it happened. My wife woke up and said whats that ,nowt i said just an earthquake love. I can remember 2 previous ones in the region and this was far greater. It was frightening. the whole roof seemed to just start rattling as though it was going to lift off walls were shaking. I have been on net and the US geological survey seem to have it right . They said '' epicentre about 30miles south of Hull so i suppose at Goole we arent a million miles away are we. Hope no one was hurt or any damage done anywhere. It was about 1.03am when it happened for about 5-10secs.

Mark Bowers – Woodhouse, Sheffield

Tremours were felt in Woodhouse Sheffield at around 12.55 Wednesday morning. The whole of the house shook.

Libby Hill – Wombwell, Barnsley

This is for john the weatherman, we had an earth tremour in wombwell barnsley at 1am this morning 27/02/08. I was sat at my computer in my bedroom and the whole house shook it shook so hard a box fell off the top of my wardrobe. He didn't predict that one haha.

David Nam - Shafton, Barnsley

At 12.55 a.m I was at home in Shafton, Barnsley practicing on my guitar when the house shook violently for 5 to 10 seconds - I thought it was an earthquake or even a bomb.  I rang a friend in Leeds to tell her and she said she'd felt it too.  I went outside and there were many neighbours in the street, checking their houses to see if the roof was still on!  We had quite a laugh about it but everyone was quite shocked.  There was no evident damage apart from me dropping my guitar on my foot, which was quite painful.  (This following on from being knocked unconcious briefly, earlier in the evening when the lid of my wheely-bin was caught by a gust of wind and struck me in the face, breaking my glasses in the process...) I think I'll stay indoors for a while.

Steve Chase – Humberside Airport

You probably have lots of reports about the tremors felt tonight already, but I was working at Humberside airport when it happened. Initially we thought it was a train wreck on the nearby line, but realised it was a tremor as the hanger kept shaking for about 10 - 15 seconds. The rotor blades on our helicopters were seen to bounce up & down (though not so badly that any damage would have been caused). I live about 5 miles away from the airport in wrawby, and my Wife said she felt the tremor & wondered what it was. She wasn't worried enough to get out of bed though! There was no damage to the hanger, or my house, & when I drove home about 30 minutes after the tremor, I didn't see any signs of damage, or even any more house lights on than usual in the village, so I guess many people didn't even notice it.

Tom Edwards -  Heckington Nr Sleaford

At approx 0100hrs my home here shook violently and for approx 15 seconds I thought I was going to die..having lived in Los Angeles some years back I got used to earth quakes but surely not here in Lincolnshire? I believe it was 4.7 on the richter scale with maybe after shocks..I mean my whole building seemed to rise up and down like a roller coaster..things falling off the walls etc and I ran to my front door portal which I was told in LA is the safest place to stand!

Patrick Hennigan – Beeston, Leeds

I live in Beeston, Leeds and at around 00.55 the house windows flexed making noises similar to a drumming, with the house doors and floor also vibrating for around 10-15 seconds. The noise and movement was sufficient to wake my son of 17, who came down stairs to ask about the event, which he had experienced on the first floor.
