
Oscar-winning film director Anthony Minghella has died at the age of 54

Minghella's publicist, Jonathan Rutter, said the filmmaker died at London's Charing Cross Hospital. He said Minghella was operated on last week for a growth in his neck, "and the operation seemed to have gone well. At 5 a.m. today he had a fatal hemorrhage."
The director from the Isle of Wight was the son of Gloria and Edward Minghella, owners of the Island's famous ice cream factory.
His films include Cold Mountain and Truly, Madly, Deeply. But he was best known for the English Patient for which he won an Oscar in 1996. He recently directed a TV adaptation of the book, the "Number One Ladies detective Agency", due to be screened this Easter.
