July 3-6 2008
Winchester, Hants
Hat Fair is Britain's longest running celebration of street arts and community. In 1974 it started as a buskers' festival where performers passed around a hat to collect a donation after their show — hence the name Hat Fair.
The name has stuck and performers are still allowed to Hat, in fact the
small-scale circle show is at the heart of the festival. Now the programme includes innovative community projects, markets, a big picnic, a huge childrens' procession, international large-scale work and commissions, music and large scale spectacular. The only rule is excellence in Outdoor and site specific work.
The event is free and contribution is voluntary, thus it is accessible to those of all means on a basis of 'pay what you can'.
