Discover Sunderland’s Countryside!
The 2008 Diabetes UK Great North Walk has a new venue! After two years in and around the scenic countryside of the ancient market town of Darlington, the event is on the move again.
The new location is the former colliery site of Herrington Country Park in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear. 170 hectares made up of new woodland, foothpaths, bridleways and lakes, along with a 500 seat amphitheatre and children’s play area. The route takes walkers along the banks of the River Wear as it passes the southern fringes of Washington and its Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust. As walkers descend the northern side of the hill after passing Penshaw Monument, resting place of the famous ‘Lambton Worm’ they will emerge from a lovely woodland stretch of the walk and enjoy a vista which reminds them of the success the region has had in attracting major companies and the contribution they make to the economy of the region. Central to this view is the vast Nissan complex and its dramatic wind turbines aswell as sections of this stunning route affording views as far afield as Durham Cathedral and the North Pennines.
The route can be tackled by people of all ages and abilities at a range of paces, enjoying the fresh air, the planned entertainment at the start and finish or stopping for picnics along the way. This is truly a family event.
Entry into the event includes a quality limited edition event t-shirt, which you can wear on the day if you wish, souvenir medal and finishers goody bag.
There is ample parking available directly adjacent to the start/finish area.
Wheels Friendly Route
We will again be having a shorter route over a distance of approximately 3 miles, on a superb tarmac route contained within the Park itself, which offers fantastic views of the surrounding area. It is suitable for wheelchairs, pushchairs and those of you with smaller children who may not be able to manage the full 10 miles.
