Thousands of Cambridge United fans are facing a disappointing journey home from Wembley tonight after their team lost the chance to win back their place in the Football League.
Cambridge faced Exeter in the Blue Square play-off final, hoping to put an end to three years outside the main tier of English football, but it ended 1-0 to Exeter.
A corner kick from Dean Moxey helped Robert Edwards to get the first goal in for Exeter in the 22nd minute. In injury time at the end of the first period, Cambridge's best chance of the half, Rob Wollaston's shot deflected away for a corner.
After the restart Paul Carden had a great chance for the Us, running to the edge of the penalty area and shooting just wide of the post. In the 68th minute Exeter nearly made it 2… Matt Gill's strike drawing a great save from Cambridge goalie Danny Potter.
