The Dales Walk for Joseph Salmon

From July 23rd to July 27th,  10 friends walked the 81 mile Dales Way footpath in aid of The Joseph Salmon Trust. This is a Huddersfield-based charity set up by Neil and Rachel Salmon in memory of their three year old son Joseph who died suddenly in his sleep in April 2005. The charity supports parents in the area who have lost a child by providing financial assistance to those who need it most.

Walk Leader Dan Hughes texted updates as he went along (mobile signal permitting – it’s a bit patchy in the Dales!)

Day 1: Wednesday, 23rd July 2008

I'm decided to drive down to the train station as i couldn't be bothered to walk. That can't be a good sign.

07:25 AM July 23, 2008

We're off!

10:02 AM July 23, 2008

The problem with taking photo's is that every time you stop to take one all the other ******* leave you behind.

10:52 AM July 23, 2008

We've stopped for lunch. Or at least half of us have. We all got separated about five miles back and the faster four have powered ahead.

12:29 PM July 23, 2008

There's a search helicopter above us. Thank's for the concern but I don't think we're at that stage yet.

12:59 PM July 23, 2008

****** ******* hills.

04:12 PM July 23, 2008

Finally caught up with the super fast group. Only to find they have been filling the video tape with 'interesting facts' i am very very ... ...

04:54 PM July 23, 2008

We've done the first day. Seventeen miles down and far to many left to go. My feet hurt

06:08 PM July 23, 2008

We've had a nice meal and now we're talking about going out for a walk. Don't ask me why as i don't quite understand it myself.

08:53 PM July 23, 2008

Day 2: Thursday, 24th July 2008

We're all getting ready for the off. Another 17 miles today *wimper*

09:23 AM July 24, 2008

Everyone is dumping as much as they can. Mushy is even contemplating going naked to reduce weight.

09:30 AM July 24, 2008

Stopped for lunch after doing six miles. Only ten more to do today.
12:52 PM July 24, 2008

Day 3: Friday, 25th July 2008

Day three and two miles into the fifteen we have to do i am absolutely ********

11:25 PM July 25, 2008

Day 4: Saturday, 26th July 2008

Sorry about the lack of updates, i haven't had a mobile signal for the past couple of days.

12:16 PM July 26, 2008

We've lost sandip, he decided that he'd rather sleep at home than with nine other men in a boiling hot bunkbarn.

12:24 PM July 26, 2008

This is twice as hard as i thought it was going to be, so i think everyone should donate twice the money as well.

12:26 PM July 26, 2008

Around half way though day three it started to get very hard. I have rather large blisters and what feels like highly strung wire instead...

12:28 PM July 26, 2008

End of the fourth day. I am feeling very very bad indeed. Now we have to put up the tents. 14 miles tomorrow.

02:38 PM July 26, 2008

I think i did something nasty to my left calf yesterday, maybe even tore it.

05:19 PM July 26, 2008

The backs of my knees were in agony all through the eight miles of today's walk.

05:20 PM July 26, 2008

I'm going to get up early and set off before the others tomorrow in an effort not to slow them down.

05:22 PM July 26, 2008

In other news i stubbed my toe and my toenail has gone black.

05:24 PM July 26, 2008

Rest assured you are all getting a lot of misery for all your sponsorship money.

05:25 PM July 26, 2008

Day 5: Sunday, 27th July 2008

Decided to keep with the group today so they can carry me if i need them to. They don't know this yet.

05:33 AM July 27, 2008

Fourteen miles today. Then ten tomorrow. Then i am never ****** walking anywhere again.

07:53 AM July 27, 2008

Stopped for lunch. five miles left to go today, fifteen in total.

01:56 PM July 27, 2008

Today hasn't actually been as bad as i thought it would be.

01:57 PM July 27, 2008

Arrived in kendal with no further problems other than our ongoing blisters and general aches. 06:25 PM July 27, 2008

Now we have reached civilisation we're planning on making the most of it and are going for a chinese. 06:27 PM July 27, 2008

Craig is going round all the beds in the youth hostel systematically breaking all the bedside lights. 11:13 PM July 27, 2008

Gav has also rejoined us after attending a wedding, so our numbers are back up to nine. 11:15 PM July 27, 2008

Day 6: Monday, 28th July 2008

Lee has the loudest snore known to man. I'm sure the people in the rooms below up must viol t was thundering last night.

07:06 AM July 28, 2008

I'm just waiting for everyone else to wake up now so we can start making moves to set off.

07:10 AM July 28, 2008

Only ten miles today, but we are all at our most injured so it will still be a bit of a struggle.

07:11 AM July 28, 2008

I officially hate hills with every fiber in my body.

11:56 AM July 28, 2008

We've finished! And I'm never going t walk anywhere again.

02:51 PM July 28, 2008

And now we're back home and it's all over. What am i going to do with my time now? Anyone up for walking to Moscow?

09:08 PM July 28, 2008
